Summer is the perfect time for firing up the barbecue pit. Unfortunately, injuries from using a propane fueled grill is possible. Many of the injuries that occur each year are avoidable by using good safety rules. To help keep you and your family safe throughout the summer, here are a few rules to follow when using a propane grill.

  1. Keep the grill away from your home. Regardless of what type of grill you have, it should never used near the home. If there is a fire flare up, any structures that are near the grill could be ignited.

  2. Check for gas leaks. Before you start the grill, take the time to inspect and tighten all of your connections. The best way to detect leaks is by applying soapy water to all connections. If the soap bubbles up when you turn on the gas, turn off the gas, and check the connection again.

  3. Review the lighting procedures. Even though you might have had your grill for a few years, it is important to refresh yourself on the lighting procedures to avoid skipping a step. Make a habit of rereading the instructions each year.

  4. Leave the grill open until lit. If you close the lid of the grill before it is lit, gas can build up inside of it. Leaving it open can help you know for a fact that the grill is lit and ready to use.

  5. Wait before relighting the grill. It might be tempting to relight the grill the second that it goes out, but you need to wait a few minutes. Waiting allows any gas that has built up to clear out before you try again.

  6. Turn off the grill, if necessary. You should be monitoring the grill throughout the cooking process. If you smell gas at any time, turn off the grill. If you have to keep relighting the grill after smelling gas, check your connections again. It might be time to service the grill if the problem persists.

  7. Disconnect the connections. After the grilling is complete and the components have cooled, remove the hose end fittings and the burner air intakes. Both pieces need to be stored in protective plastic bags. Removing them keeps them clean and prevents moisture from ruining them.

Taking the time to practice good safety habits not only helps to keep you and your family safe, but it ensures that you are getting the most from your barbecue grill.
